Q: Can you set the exact times that it changes from green to yellow and then to red: e.g. 4 min of green + 1 min yellow, then red (5 min total)?

You can control the length of time it is green and yellow, but it stays on red for a designated (short) time.

Q: Does it have to be reset each use or can you just stop and restart using the same timer length?

You can keep it from the last timer by just clicking the power then enter on timer and enter again.

Q: Does it have volume control?

Not that I can tell, but the sound part is optional. My child (who has PDD/NOS) loves it without the sound because it provides a visual cue for time management. She uses it for homeschooling, chores, and even computer time. The green will go into yellow at the halfway point you program, then the yellow will flash as it gets close to red, and then the red flashes to signal "time's up!".

Q: Does the timer count down to let you know how much time is remaining until the buzzer goes off?

It changes color to let you know it is getting closer to time being up. And then the last like 10 seconds there is an audible ticking countdown. Then it beeps.

This was originally bought for my wife who is an elementary school teacher, but I've been using it at home for the kids in timing their homework.It worked great the first few times and then the batteries died.Will replace them shortly.
